The Institute of Law for Science and Technology (ILST) was established in 2000 under the College of Technology Management at National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan.  Located in Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan’s Silicon Valley, the ILST offers cutting-edge legal education essential to the evolving global economy.  The goal of the ILST is to provide students with a solid understanding of fundamental legal theories, as well as interdisciplinary training in law, science, and technology.  In particular, we are dedicated to equip students with the tools needed to excel in this increasingly competitive era of knowledge economy.

National Tsing Hua University is a world-class research and educational institution in science and technology.  The addition of the ILST in 2000 marked the University’s commitment to reflect national developments and offer legal training that will best serve the society in the 21st century.

There are currently ten full-time faculty members at the ILST, consisting of two professors, two associate professors, and six assistant professors.  In addition, the ILST has jointly appointed an associate professor with the Center for General Education at National Tsing Hua University and a professor with the Institutum Iurisprudentiae of Academia Sinica in Taiwan.

The ILST’s faculty members are renowned for both their dedicated teaching and research capabilities.  Their expertise includes the following five areas: biotechnology (biomedicine) and law, environmental law, info-communications law, intellectual property law, and international and comparative law.  We offer courses corresponding to each of the above research areas.

The ILST offers master’s degrees and enrolls approximately 25 students per year.  In the beginning, we only admitted students who have no prior legal training but started to admit students with a primary legal degree in 2002.  There are currently 101 LL.M. students enrolled at the ILST.  The faculty-student ratio is approximately 1:9.2.

The ILST has mapped out an expansion plan for the upcoming decade, including the launch of a Ph.D. program and the appointment of more faculty members.  These efforts will help us achieve an elevated level of academic excellence.

Over the past years, the ILST has established favorable relations with a variety of foreign institutions, including Moscow State University, Helsinki University, University of Wisconsin, and Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property.  In the future, we will continue to garner close ties with prestigious institutions across the globe in order to benefit from diversified and innovative legal education and research.
